Term length: 2 years, renewable up to 3 times

Meetings: Approximately 6 per year, ideally in person; a hybrid format may be possible for certain meetings.

Compensation: Volunteer position; a compensation policy is currently under discussion.

About Éduc’alcool

Éduc’alcool is an independent non-profit organization that has been committed for more than 37 years to raising awareness among Quebecers about responsible alcohol consumption. The organization seeks to be recognized as a credible and independent authority on responsible consumption, supported by Quebec society. Guided by its values, Éduc’alcool is committed to informing with transparency and courage, sharing its expertise through awareness initiatives, promoting responsible consumption, and valuing collective intelligence in support of informed choices.

The organization has recently modernized its governance and strategic directions in order to broaden its reach and engage a variety of target groups through innovative, high-impact prevention strategies, while continuing to carry out public awareness campaigns.

Roles and Responsibilities of Board Members

The Board of Directors is composed of nine volunteer members, each appointed for a two-year term, renewable up to three times. Meetings are held preferably in person in Montreal, at Éduc’alcool’s office, and occasionally in a hybrid format depending on members’ availability.

As a Board member, you play an essential role in the organization’s operations and in shaping its future direction.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Attending approximately six meetings per year;
  • Overseeing resource management to ensure alignment with the organization’s mission;
  • Contributing to strategy development and organizational priorities;
  • Offering insights to improve projects and services.

You must also:

  • Understand and commit to Éduc’alcool’s mission, vision, and values;
  • Build and maintain stakeholder relationships;
  • Work in collaboration and respectfully with fellow board members and management;
  • Dedicate time to prepare for, attend, and actively engage in meetings, committees, the annual general meeting, and other events;
  • Be a member of Éduc’alcool, at a cost of $25 per year.

Your other professional commitments should not create actual, apparent, or potential conflicts of interest or interfere significantly with your role on the Board. Committee assignments will be determined after the annual general meeting.

Candidate Profile

Candidates must bring professional experience and leadership qualities aligned with the responsibilities of the role and the organization’s mission. The composition of the Board of Directors should reflect broad diversity, particularly in terms of competencies, experience, sectors, gender, age, and other visible or invisible qualities and identities, in a way that reflects the diversity of Quebec society.

Based on an analysis of the essential and desired competencies within Éduc’alcool’s Board, and taking into account the strengths already represented, we are primarily seeking, without limitation, candidates with strengths in the following areas:

  • Fundraising, philanthropy, and non-profit management;
  • Public health, addiction, prevention, and awareness;
  • Public relations, marketing, and communications;
  • Business development, partnerships, and business management.

The following will also be considered assets:

  • Certification in corporate governance;
  • Expertise, experience, and/or a network of contacts and influence in the following sectors: restaurants, hospitality, bars, the alcohol industry, post-secondary education, the business community, chambers of commerce, professional orders and associations, the events sector, and festivals.

The general competencies sought in Board directors include:

  • Defining and reviewing the governance framework;
  • Helping ensure the effective functioning of the Board of Directors;
  • Exercising the Board’s employer role with respect to the Executive Director;
  • Overseeing the implementation of the organization’s strategic plan, including its broader social commitment;
  • Ensuring sound and integrated risk management;
  • Exercising a general oversight role;
  • Demonstrating strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Demonstrating strong personal competencies.

For the position of Board Chair, the following additional competencies are sought:

  • Strategic thinking and the ability to bring a forward-looking vision to the organization;
  • Ensuring sound governance in accordance with the established framework;
  • Leading the Board of Directors;
  • Helping establish and maintain effective and harmonious relations with the organization’s Executive Director;
  • Representing the organization;
  • Demonstrating transformational leadership and governance expertise;
  • Maintaining a high standard of independence and ethics, essential to the organization’s credibility.
